Eagles song: ‘The Last Resort’
The final track on the 1976 Eagles magnum opus album Hotel California is a song called “The Last Resort.” Written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, it recounts the westward expansion of white people across America and their destruction of successive paradises as a result, concluding with Hawaii.
Lahaina and a neon sign are mentioned in the song’s lyrics:
You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign, ‘Jesus is Coming’,
brought the white man’s burden down,
brought the white man’s reign.
