Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii — Black Rock is a lava flow at Maui’s westernmost tip, known as Pu’u Keka’a in Hawaiian. It cuts Kaanapali Beach in half, and an ocean current flows from this southern side around the Black Rock’s tip, creating a popular Black Rock Swim route for experienced swimmers who like to go with the flow. The waters at Black Rock are also a popular snorkeling spot where many fish and some sea turtles can be observed.

The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is anchored right on top of and into Black Rock.

Ancient Hawaiians considered Black Rock the jumping-off point where the spirits of Maui’s departed left the island. To commemorate this tradition, the Sheraton presents a Daily Cliff Dive Ceremony at sunset, during which a cliff diver lights torches on the property on a path out to Black Rock’s tip. After lighting the last torch, he casts a flower lei into the sea, then dives into the ocean himself to the gasps of tourist spectators.
