Honolulu, Hawaii — Cotton Hawaiian quilt on display at the Bishop Museum, artifact number 1988.214:
This quilt’s floral pattern is unique and not recognizable. Blue applique done on white background made by Kauhine Kamalau c. 1900s to commemorate Halley’s Comet of 1910. The width of the applique material is 76.2 cm, indicating that this quilt was made of an older fabric. Contour quilting enhanced by small accent stitches is used to create a ripple appearance. Small knots visible at the edge of the quilt indicate the starting point of the quilting.
