Mount Airy, North Carolina — Restaurant sign for Snappy Lunch (and Coca-Cola) at 125 N. Main St., where Andy Griffith occasionally ate as a boy growing up in Mount Airy. The restaurant is famous for its pork chop sandwich, created by restaurant owner Charles Dowell, who has been at Snappy Lunch for more than 50 years but no longer cooks.
Andy Griffith was born and raised in Mount Airy, which provided at least some of the basis for TV’s fictional community of Mayberry. In an early episode of The Andy Griffith Show entitled “Andy the Matchmaker,” Andy suggested to Barney that they go to the Snappy Lunch to get a bite to eat.
