Punchbowl: National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific

Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii — The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (also known as Punchbowl National Cemetery) is located in Punchbowl Crater, just north of downtown Honolulu. It serves as a memorial to men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.The cemetery opened to the public on July 19, 1949, with services for five war dead: an unknown serviceman, two Marines, an Army lieutenant, and one civilian — noted war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Eventually, over 13,000 soldiers and sailors who died during World War II would be laid to rest in the Punchbowl.
