Paia, Maui, Hawaii — Statue at the shrine honoring Father Damien of Molokai, who spent over 16 years ministering to victims of leprosy (Hansen’s disease) at the leper colony on Molokaʻi, and ultimately contracted and died from the disease himself.

This shine is located at Holy Rosary Parish, 954 Baldwin Ave, Paia. The inscription reads:

FATHER DAMIEN DEVEUSTER, SS. CC.
APOSTLE OF MOLOKAI 1840-1889
ME KE ALOHA POINA OLE

There’s a small museum on Oahu housing pictures and artifacts of Father Damien at St. Augustine by-the-sea, 130 Ohua Ave. in Honolulu.
